Veteran Kathak dancer-guru Rohini Bhate was among the senior most Kathak exponents of the country. She died on October 10, 2008 at the age of 84, leaving behind a rich legacy of Kathak compositions. A dancer, teacher and scholar par excellence, Rohini Bhate performed extensively for five decades. She was held in high esteem by colleagues and critics alike. She studied Bharatanatyam under Guru Parvati Kumar, and Kathak under Pandit Lacchu Maharaj and Pandit Mohan Rao Kallianpurkar. Her scholarship, her deep understanding of Kathak, music and rhythm and her innovative bent enriched the Kathak fraternity with her profound and scholarly approach to the art.
