For the second year in a row, the Indo-American Arts Council is sponsoring a dance festival showcasing India's ancient but continually evolving dance forms. The "Erasing Borders Festival of Indian Dance" begins Friday, with a tribute to the late Kathak dance scholar Rohini Bhate, at Dance New Amsterdam in New York. An account of Bhate's life and work will follow the 6 p.m. lecture-demonstration "Mathematics and Rhythm," examining these aspects of classical North Indian Kathak dance. Dance New Amsterdam is located at 280 Broadway (entrance on Chambers Street). Tickets are $10 general admission and $7 for students. "Rhythmic Stories," a workshop introducing children to Indian dance, begins at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Rubin Museum of Art, 150 West 17th St. at Seventh Ave. Tickets are $10. Evening dance workshops for adults begin Aug. 18 ($20 per workshop), and a free performance will be offered at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 19, as part of the annual Downtown Dance Festival at Chase Manhattan Plaza.
