Synopsis:
Still shrouded in controversy and mystery, the gripping story of Indian national hero "Netaji" Subhas Chandra Bose gets an epic treatment from veteran director Shyam Benegal. In his telling of a dramatic story that has all but disappeared from public memory, Benegal follows the leader who diverged from Gandhi (who once remarked that he had two political sons, Jawaharlal Nehru and "that mischievous Netaji") to meet with Adolf Hitler and General Hideki Tojo in his fight for Indian independence. Benegal follows the astonishing life of the man who created India's first national army that battled the Allied forces in the jungles of Burma, until his mysterious death in 1945. With Sachin Khedekar, Rajit Kapur, Kulbhushan Kharbanda and Rajeshwari Singh. |
Director:Shyam Benegal
Starting with his film Ankur in 1974, Shyam Benegal ushered in the era of the New Indian Cinema. He has made 24 feature films, several documentaries and TV series, notably a 53 hour TV series on the The Discovery of India. Many of his films have won national and international awards.
He is the recipient of two of the most prestigious awards of the Government of India - Padma Shri(1976) and Padma Bhushan (1991). He is also the recipient of the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for Lifetime Achievement in Indian Cinema (2005).
In 2007, he was conferred with a D.Litt (Honoris Causa) from the Jamia Millia University, New Delhi.
Mr. Benegal was a Homi Bhabha fellow (1970-72) during which time, he studied Children's Television with CTW ( Children's Television Workshop) in New York and worked as Associate Producer with WGBH, Boston. He has lectured extensively on cinema, television, information technology and different aspects of social and cultural change, in institutions all over the world.
Mr. Benegal runs a film production company in Mumbai and is presently a Member of the Rajya Sabha - the Upper House of the Indian Parliament. |
