        | THE WINDOW (Janala) Directed by Buddhadeb Dasgupta.
India, 2009, 110 min. In Bengali, with English subtitles. NY Premiere.

Synopsis: Bimal and Meera are a young Kolkata couple, very much in love and on the verge of getting married. But Bimal has an idealistic streak. On a visit to his old school, he sees how it has fallen into disrepair and decides to donate a new window to replace the now-decrepit one from which he gazed as a boy. Dasgupta directs this story with the assurance and fluidity of a master, weaving in a parallel plot about a pair of circus performers to contrast Bimal and Meera's story to satirize elements of Indian society. With Indranil Sengupta, Swastika Mukherjee, Tapas Paul, Shankar Chakraborty.
Preceded by: IRIS. An elderly woman finds a treasure trove. Directed by Maya Anand. US, 2009, 15 min. NY Premiere.
