The 1947 Partition leaves a middle-class Muslim family suddenly adrift in what used to be home, in this fascinating Indian New Wave drama. Based upon a short story by Ismat Chughtai, Garm Hawa is an early, iconic film of the Indian New Wave that emerged in the late 1960s as an alternative to mainstream cinema. The family faces suspicion and boycotts from the greater Hindu community, in Sathyu’s radical departure from the exotic ambience often depicted in the films known as Muslim Socials. With brilliant clarity, the film focuses on the hardship of the Partition experience and day-to-day trials and tribulations. |
