Sardari Begum
Shyam Benegal, 1996, India; 116m

The alluring charm of thumri song comes alive in this contemporary story of Muslim singer, Sardari (Kiron Kher), who falls victim to communal skirmishes. Creatively reworking the Courtesan genre, Benegal tells the story of a singer killed in a seemingly random way through the memories of family members and associates. Her untimely death, a sign of prejudice, does not erase the value of her struggle to make art, as she inspires two other young women (her daughter and niece). Featuring Vanraj Bhatia’s music and impressive singers, especially Arti Tikekar Ankalikar
