Umrao Jaan
J.P. Dutta, 2006, India; 189m

Superstar Aishwarya Rai (also in Jodhaa Akbar) plays a Lucknow woman abducted to be a courtesan in this portrait of Lucknow’s famous poet and singer. Umrao Jaan creates a world of beauty, poetry, music, dance, and culture—all embodied in the figure of the enchanting courtesan, the most desired and yet the most condemned of women. Told through Umrao’s point of view, the film has an undertow of melancholic yearning, as Umrao is unable to marry the man she loves, and faces an uncertain return to her family. Featuring stunningly realized mujras (the formal dance by a courtesan for a gathering) and a powerful performance from Rai.
