Shonali Bose’s Toronto player “Margarita With a Straw” is the opening night film May 4 at the New York Indian fest, organizers announced.
Bose’s “Amu” played at NYIFF in 2005. “Margarita,” starring Kalki Koechlin, centers around a young woman with cerebral palsy. Helmer Bose will participate in a Q&A following the screening at the Paris Theater in Gotham.
“Shonali has been a loyal member of the NYIFF family for several years, as well as a rising star in the forefront of India’s growing indie film movement, always pushing the boundaries as in her docudrama ‘Amu,’ about the 1984 Sikh genocide, which also premiered at NYIFF in 2005,” said Aroon Shivdasani, executive director of fest organizer Indo-American Arts Council.
NYIFF also announced special screenings of Vishal Bhardwaj’s Shakespeare trilogy: “Maqbool” (“Macbeth”), “Omkara” (“Othello”) and “Haider” (“Hamlet”). Bhardwaj will take part in post-screening discussions on his films, which will unspool May 5-9 at Village Theatres.
“A filmmaker changes and grows with every film,” Bhardwaj said. “I am thrilled to see my Shakespeare trilogy at NYIFF and trace both my personal and professional journeys over the last decade in my films and music.”
The 15th edition of NYIFF will run May 4-10.
