An evening with Vijay Tendulkar

Join us for an evening celebrating Vijay Tendulkar, a leading contemporary Indian playwright, screen and television writer, literary essayist, political journalist, and social commentator. For the past four decades he has been the most influential dramatist and theater personality in Marathi language.

A lifelong resident of the city of Bombay, V. Tendulkar, born 1928, is the author of thirty full-length plays and twenty-three one-act plays, several of which have become classics of modern Indian theater.

Named the "Arthur Miller" of India's theatre, his social conscience, the roles he has scripted for women, his fight for justice, modern representations of gender roles, his criticism of the class system in India and his dialogue with western theatre catapulted him to the forefront of modern Indian theatre.

The evening will include a reading of excerpts from the current NYC production of Sakharam-The Book-Binder by The Play Company, short excerpts of his major films, and a moderated interview with the playwright. The Indo-American Arts Council will present him with a Lifetime Award.

Be part of the American conference honoring the theatre and film work of Vijay Tendulkar. Discussed will be his plays like Shantata! court chalu ahe (Silence! The Court Is in Session, 1967), Sakharam binder (Sakharam the Book-Binder, 1972), Kamala (1981) and Ghashiram kotwal (Ghashiram the Constable, 1972), one of the longest-running musicals in the world, with over six thousand performances in India and abroad. Vijay Tendulkar has also worked as a screen-writer in Hindi, India's majority language and the preferred medium of the world's largest film industry. Films like Nishant (The End of the Night, 1975), Akrosh (Rage, 1980), and Aghat (The Wound, 1986) defined the paradigm for the "middle cinema" movement in India, positioned between the art cinema of such film-makers as Satyajit Ray, and the commercial cinema produced by Bollywood.
