Three Women, Three Stories 2: Fareen Butt,
Maureen Drdak, Reeta Karmarkar
November 5 - November 27, 2010
Opening Reception with Artists: Friday, November 5th, 6:30-9 pm
The three artists in this exhibition seemingly have little in common until one looks at their resumes. Each has found inspiration in techniques and genres of art outside of their cultures of origin. This appropriation by each artist has resulted in stunningly original work. The representational mountainscapes by Fareen are a fusion of 19th century Pointillism with gemstone pigment. Maureen's latest work represents the first synthesis of repoussé, a technique primarily used by Newari artists, and contemporary painting. Reeta's abstracted designs, originally influenced by 14th century perspectives, both narrow and expand space in a mixture of hard edged and painterly strokes.
