Barriers

ZventsORE

Barriers takes place four months after 9/11 and deals with the Chinese/Pakistani Abbas family, and the loss of their oldest son Nabhil at the World Trade Center. The Abbas's only daughter, Sunima, comes home to announce her pending engagement to a white man. However, Sunima’s news becomes lost in a mire of household problems: Shehriar, the seventeen year old, is unable to process his grief and refuses to go to school. Khalil, the father, battles with his need to find solace in a religion that is now under attack. Naima, the Chinese-born mother who has converted to Islam, struggles with her own issues of identity and how others perceive her. Meanwhile, Nabhil serves as a ghostly memory to each of these characters as they all find themselves fighting to deal with his loss.
