There’s more to Indian art than the lavish jewelry and illustrations of the “Maharaja” exhibit at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. In this century and the last, more than 20 million people of Indian origin shifted countries. Cultural dislocation required drastic adaptation, often producing unexpectedly powerful results in works of art. Art6 Gallery shows off that art with “Erasing Borders,” an exhibit curated by the Indo-American Arts Council of New York that consists entirely of work by North American artists who have origins in the Indian subcontinent. “Erasing Borders” opens at Art6 Gallery on Friday, Aug. 3, and continues through Aug. 31. art6.org. |
