British Director, Sangeeta Dutta's Film "Life Goes On" has the unique distinction of casting Sharmila Tagore and her daughter Soha Ali Khan for the very first time together and offers an interesting account of conceptualizing film as an ‘organic’ entity whose philosophical potential lies in its per-formative character and its possibilities to transcend traditional ways of thinking.
" I had been wanting to share filmography with my mother and there had been several offers but none convinced us. Sangeeta's script was very convincing and it seemed almost organic for me to play daughter to my mother in the film," stated Soha Ali Khan. " Life Goes On is an original film, it is non-formulaic, and I am so happy that it is getting released now and Databazaar Media Ventures is taking it to the large market in North America
even before its release in India," It was my first British film and in many ways I am the British-Asian girl Dia. I have been educated in Oxford and LSE and I have also worked in London. Working with my mother , who is a living legend, was daunting to say the least! For many reasons the film is very personal to me and the work I will always want to own and view whenever I want to.
The film has an ensemble of the finest talent from Bollywood. that include besides Sharmila Tagore and Soha Ali Khan, veterans, Girish Karnad and Om Puri.
" Life Goes On is a significant film and I am very pleased that Databazaar Media Ventures is releasing it in North America," stated Sharmila Tagore. " This is my first British film and I very much liked the process of working with a British crew, with Om Puri and with my daughter Soha for the first time."
Oney Seal, Chairman of the Databazaar group of companies said, " Life Goes On is our very first English Language film which is slated for mainstream release all over North America. The Indian Diaspora living here will be able to immediately identify with this film."
" I have enjoyed the process of Life Goes On and working with all the young talent in London. The film is about a Diaspora community in a multicultural world. Today it is important for all of us to understand different cultures and beliefs and respect it. To me the film is about tolerance - that is the most important message of the film. It also gave me a chance to do a romantic role at my age- opposite Sharmila- our "Sapnon ki raani!"stated
Om Puri
Director Sangeeta Dutta expressing satisfaction over the release of the film in North America said, " Databazaar Media Ventures has been doing pioneering work in bringing good Bengali cinema to North America. They are now doing Life Goes On- which is an English language film. I am very happy that my film has found a home with DMV and am hopeful it will reach a large audience there who are waiting to see meaningful cinema." " I wrote Life Goes On as I started growing into the British Asian community in London. Here is a multicultural society and people have made long journeys to reach where they are here. Identity is about history, about the present and where you look for the future. I found it quite compelling to rework the King Lear story in a British-Asian Diaspora family. I found it most compelling to tell the story of a man who gets over his prejudice and fear and learns to look at a more hopeful, inclusive world. Working with some of my favorite actors from India as with a bunch of young talent from London was very rewarding- a great learning curve": Dutta added.
The drama explores the relations between a grief stricken father and his three daughters. Set in London, the time is now, the family of Indian origin- part of the UK diaspora.
With his wife’s sudden death, Sanjay is suddenly thrown into close proximity with his three daughters. The drama unfolds over five days from the day when Manju dies to day of the funeral. Haunted by memories, grappling with this devastating loss, missing the mediating influence of his wife, Sanjay finds himself assessing and carving out new relations with his three daughters. He is faced with a further crisis when he discovers his youngest and most loved daughter Dia, has a Muslim boyfriend -Imtiaz. Confused and angry, Sanjay leaves home and wanders the streets of London one night. With an unexpected series of events, Sanjay is forced to face his past demons, his trauma over the partition of India when as a child, he was forced to leave his home with his parents. Finally to come to terms with his old and unspoken prejudice about Muslims, in the larger context of the country in the grips of Islamaphobia as the events of 7/7 and the consequences of the Iraq war reverberate.
As he sits drenched and tired on a bench on Hampstead Heath and watches the sun rise – Sanjay puts his demons to rest. At the funeral he has come to terms with himself, he allows the Muslim boy to join the family rituals and sees his daughters for what they are and not what he expected them to be.
