IAAC PRESENTS INDIA NOW: New Films From India at the MOMA
Event Summary:
The Indo-American Arts Council in association with The Museum of Modern Art presents the inaugural annual exhibition of nine new feature films and two short films from India spotlighting the wide range of fiction and documentary styles and genres evident in India today. India Now, which will be presented from April 22–30, 2007, in The Roy and Niuta Titus Theaters, includes films from Bollywood blockbusters to independent cinema from diverse regions in India. Several of the films will premiere at India Now, including the opening night film Parzania(2005) by filmmaker, Rahul Dholakia, a moving account of the Gujarat riots of 2002. India Now is organized by Joshua Siegel, Assistant Curator, Department of Film, The Museum of Modern Art, and Uma Da Cunha, guest curator.
India is one of the world's fastest growing nations, with a healthy film industry: over 1,000 features are produced each year, from Bollywood blockbusters to intimate Malayalam, Bengali, and Tamil “art films.” Aroon Shivdasani, Executive Director of the IAAC says,
“We are very excited by this collaboration with the MOMA as it marks recognition of a viable audience for Indian films by a major American museum. We hope to make similar strides for other Indian artistic disciplines in the coming seasons.” The IAAC has a long history of building awareness of Indian artistic disciplines in North America. Founded in 1998, the IAAC has helped promote Indian culture through art, books, dance, fashion, film, music, and theatre. This partnership with the MOMA highlights IAAC’s endeavor to showcase and bring to the mainstream audience collaborative exhibitions of Indian artists across all disciplines.
The exhibition is made possible by Marguerite and Kent Charugundla. Additional generous support is provided by The International Council of The Museum of Modern Art.
