Lasya lives with her father Karma and her younger brother Chomo in a remote village in the Himalayas. Their tiny hamlet is surrounded by pristine snow capped mountains and the barren harsh land around them stretches for miles into nowhere.
One day the army moves in to their village. Looking to reinforce security measures, they settle a hundred yards across the doorstep of the family and find a frozen corpse in the village. The last bit of comfort the family draws from their familiar surroundings changes into a harsh, ceaseless and irreversible conflict.
Shot in an average height of 12.000 feet above the sea level in Ladakh, in the eastern parts of Kashmir on the China border, “Frozen” tells the touching and somber story of Lasya and her family, whose dream-like existence is interrupted by inevitable odds, one after the other. Leaving out the hues of amber of the natural landscape in favor of high-contrast black and white photography that resonates with the punishing conditions of the timeless land and the gloomy feelings it evokes, director Shivajee Chandrabhushan employs a unique stylistic modus which, along with the daringly subjective premise of the narrative, have been praised as a breakthrough in the Indian arthouse screen. |
