ARTIST STATEMENT
One of my primary intentions as an artist is to examine both our tangible and ethereal environments and how we relate to them. The rich history of my ancestry and heritage offers ideas of symbolism in nature and social culture that are recurring sources of inspiration. My work explores themes of transformation, and spirituality-creating a space that allows the subject matter to most resemble the often pluralistic and complex condition of life in the multicultural modern world. Recent works feature multi-layered surfaces, rich in color. Remnants of partially erased lines and covered shapes are used to suggest the passage of time and its significance in the present. Softer, organic elements are often seen pushing through to the surface in spite of their rigid surroundings. Though these landscapes are abstract by design, the subject matter draws from identifiable South Asian motifs and architecture-derived from memory as well as observation.
