James
Brown was born in Los Angeles, California in 1951. Brown studied painting
and print-making at Immaculate Heart College in Hollywood, California
from 1970-1972, in the print department founded by Sister Mary Corita.
Brown then studied lithography at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris
from 1972-1974, and received his B.F.A from Immaculate Heart College
in 1974. While still in school, he moved from Los Angeles to Paris
where he would live and work for 7 years. In 1978, he had his first
museum show in the Gemeentemuseum, Arnheim, Holland, and his first
one-man show with Christiane and Eric Germain, a highly respected
and innovative gallery in Paris. In 1979, Brown moved to New York.
In 1983, Brown had his first exhibitions in the U.S.A., at the Nature
Morte Gallery in New York and at the Tony Shafrazi Gallery in New
York, where he was grouped with other upcoming and young artists such
as Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, Donald Baechler and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
At this time, he also had his first of many shows with Lucio Amelio
in Naples. He has since shown with Akira Ikeda Gallery, Tokyo, Galerie
Bruno Bischofberger, Zurich and Leo Castelli Gallery, New York. Brown
has consistently been working in Paris with Galerie Lelong and continues
to produce a large body of printed work with Atelier Franck Bordas
every year. The catalogue raisonne of his graphic work was published
in Paris in 2000. Although Brown is best known for his painted abstractions
and experimental prints, he has a long history with other mediums
including ceramics, textiles and artist books. In 1995, James Brown
moved to Oaxaca, Mexico, where he started with his wife, Alexandra,
the Carpe Diem Press, inviting leading artists and writers to create
limited-edition books. With the Carpe Diem Press, Brown has also championed
the self-produced print. His work is in various public collections
including the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Metropolitan Museum
of Art New York, the Whitney Museum New York, Musee Pompidou Paris
and the Tamayo Museum in Mexico City. He is currently represented
by the Anthony Grant Inc. in New York. He resides and keeps his studio
in Tlalixtac de Cabrera, Oaxaca, Mexico and continues to have a studio
in Paris.
