Update of Tsunami Funds

Tamil Nadu Women’s Collective:

The TNWC proposal addresses livelihoods of 1200 families in 8 villages in Tutikorin district, covering livelihoods from fishing, fish vending and salt pans. Most of these are dalit families who were left out of the government aid programs. A needs assessment survey will be conducted to identify the most needy. Relief supplies will be provided where no help has been received from other sources. Women will be organized into self help groups and access will be provided to credit and exploring alternative livelihoods. As entry strategy in the project villages, fishing boats and out-board motors will be repaired and fishing nets will be provided. Children's balwadi and camp will be set up to ensure all children go to school. The project budget is Rs.5 million or $ 115,000 over two years. $57K has been allocated to this project by the IAAC from the money collected at the February 4, 2005 Tsunami Disaster Benefit in New York.
