Bio:

Firdose Ahmad Jan was born in "Srinagar, Kashmir into a family of shawl weavers who have been practicing this craft for centuries. His father, Bashir Ahmad Jan a Shilp Guru (Living Legend) gave him training in weaving and embroidery . The Guru Shishya parampara (passing on knowledge from teacher to student) very much part of our cultural heritage. Their family has revived a number of designs in weaving and in embroidery. Some specimens of these, they are bringing to the Indian Folk Art Market at the Asia Society in New York.

Craft: Pashmina Shawl Weaving

Method and Material:

The delectably fine pashmina shawl is woven in Kashmir. They are made from the fine hair of the pashmina goats. The shawl weaving involves cleaning and transforming raw pashmina into fine threads, weaving the thread with a loom and hand embroidery floral motifs with silk or metal.
