The Indo-American Arts Council (IAAC), in partnership with women's retail store and event space Misha Nicole staged a fashion event in New York on April 15.
Called 'Global Runway's Night Out', the showing offered a platform to prominent Indian-origin designers like Naeem Khan and Amrita Singh to share their world-class creations.
Seen here is a model showcasing a gorgeous bridal gown with sweetheart neckline and a flouncing tulle skirt.

Besides Khan and Singh, talents like White + Warren, Sachin-Babi, R va Mivasagar, Payal Singhal, Shekhar Rahate and Stephanie Singh also figured amongst the designers.
And a new addition was yesteryears supermodel Padma Lakshmi, who has now taken to designing jewellery. The accessories and clothing were a tasteful mix, like this classic black evening gown with only earrings to set it off. |

Keeping in mind global sensibilities, not all the outfits showcased had overt Indian influences -- take for instance this chic winter knit ensemble. |

Of course, there were distinct traces of ethnic inspirations in some of the creations, although they were subtle and fused well with an overall Western appeal, like this mini with tribal trim and accessories. |

The idea behind 'Global Runway's Night Out' is to promote Indian-origin artists in the US, which is the Indo-American Arts Council's mission across all disciplines.
Most of these artists, however, are forging a reputation for themselves based on their own merit, like Naeem Khan -- First Lady Michelle Obama chose to wear one of his designs to the First State Dinner. |

All the garments showcased rated high on the wearability scale -- fusion tunics and leggings were particularly popular. |

Keeping in mind the latest trend of geometric silhouettes, a lot of sharp cuts and cutting-edge tailoring dominated the runway. |

From staid to colourful, casual to classy and edgy to elegant, there was something on offer for every kind of wardrobe. |

The models descended a staircase lined with candles in a very serene, zen-like setting as the cameras flashed away. |

Of course, the ambience was only an add-on to the garments, which were the cynosure of all eyes, like this floor-sweeping satin number. |

One of the most attractive ensembles of the evening was definitely this black billowing gown, complete with a train of peacock feathers down the back. |

And here, we see a toast to success as Aroon Shivdasani, Executive Director of the IAAC took to the stage alongside Misha Nicole.
Said Shivdasani,"The designers represented in this show have a definite place in the artistic tapestry of the New York Fashion scene through their exciting use of colour, textiles, fabrics and style." We're inclined to agree! |
