BABITA IN NYC
April 26, 2010

The applauds for Babita Malkani’s collection ‘Boh-Aum’ were deafening as she showcased her Lakme Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2010 at the Global Runway’s Night Out in New York recently, alongside famous contemporaries like Padma Lakshmi, Misha Nicole, Naeem Khan, Stephanie Singh, Warren+White, etc.

Her journey to the serene and mesmerizing Bhutan turned out to become the inspiration behind her recent ensemble ‘BOH-AUM’. Her collection’s structure form and vibrant geometrics reflects this beautiful Kingdom’s prominent architecture, culture and art.

Babita was invited to showcase this very exotic and exclusive collection at Global Runway’s night out which was organized by The Indo-American Arts Council, Inc. and Misha Nicole at the Paramount hotel in Times Square, New York. A select number of designers were invited to present their collections amidst a very exclusive and elite audience of NYC who were specially invited for the show. This was followed by a sneak preview of Misha Nicole’s pop up shop the next day, where Babita Malkani had a complete sell-out.
Sharing her experience Babita said,  “I had a fabulous time at the GRNO this year, other than the usual buzz, the whole experience was mind-boggling; meeting high-end fashionista’s from New- York, and receiving complements from such a fashion aware audience really sealed the deal for me! Of course selling out a collection in just five hours was overwhelming and very humbling.”

Babita’s collection was spotted by Misha during her visit to India at the LFW and Misha insisted that Babita bring her collection to NYC and extended her the invitation to be a part of GRNO. She was also asked to share her knowledge on fashion at the Fashion Institute of Technology of New York, but was unable to do so due to prior commitments.
The collection has a strong Bohemian disposition, and has unique aspects such as Harlequin prints on her outfits that are incorporated in bold colours and designs; the harem shorts have been paired with heels.

Her ability to intersperse Bhutan’s traditional art and elements with a very modern and contemporary silhouette is a craft she excels in. Origami pleats that are in vogue at the moment were fastened with traditional Bhutanese art crafted in metal which really brought together the synergy of her designs. Also, Babita has pepped the famous shackle styled shoes with fabric and eclectic colours, which created a riot at the showing. Her ability to synchronize different styles and art forms makes Babita’s work so internationally sought after.
