The play centers around a 7 year fire sacrifice to propitiate Indra. the King of Gods, to bring rain. Woven around a little known tale from the Mahabharata. Girish Karnad brings into focus caste hegemony and the subservience of the marginalized classes to the power of the brahmin. Strands of marital revolt, self-sacrifice, the life-art interplay and the case of the larger good occupy key positions in the play's spectrum.
