MASTER CLASS: Abhinaya: Expression and Narratives in Indian Dance
By Guru Rachna Sarang, Kathak exponent, teacher and choreographer
An interactive session - open to professional dancers and advanced dance student from all genres of dance - to explore the intricacies of Abhinaya through the perspective of a senior artist and her recollections of the masters she studied with and witnessed.
Note: Dress Code - Salwar-Kurta or Long sleeve tops and Pant or leotards.

PROBLEM-SOLVING SEMINAR: Movement & Choreography
By Tadej Brdnik, Principal Dancer, Martha Graham Dance Company
As a choreographer thinks about creating new work, one faces the challenge of translating one's vision into visual, physical and spatial reality through movement. In this seminar Tadej gives a brief overview of the Graham technique and will discuss strategies used by the Martha Graham Dance Company in solving choreographic problems. Connecting the seminar to the previous master class, Tadej will also share how Martha Graham used narrative in her work. This seminar is an interactive session where dancers and choreographers will have the opportunity to discuss ideas, and perspectives to be inspired by a collective creative energy.
Note: This Seminar is open to professional dancers and advanced dance students from all genres of dance.

Dr. Kothari will present highlights from four decades of watching and writing about Indian Dance, and will share excerpts from his video archives of masters, trail-blazers and stars of Indian Dance.

Kalamandalam Gopi (Documetary Film on Kathakali): In the film Gopi is presented in the first person narrative. The film watches as the artiste transforms himself into diverse and glittering personalities and, in the process, we obtain rare glimpses of his life and art. Gopi is adept at playing all types of roles, whether the characters are pacha, kathi of kari. The film won the State award for best documentary in 1999. [Direction: Adoor Gopalakrishnan][43 Minutes]
Jagoida Katthoklabi Surjamukhi Devi (Documentary Film on Manipuri): In the film, veteran Manipuri dancer and teacher Surjamukhi Devi narrates her journey as a Manipuri dancer and one of India's cultural ambassadors who represented India in dance and cultural festivals around the world, in post-independence India. It gives a glimpse into the training, aesthetics and repertoire of Manipuri dance. [Direction Y.Romabai Devi] [23 Minutes]

WORKSHOP: Body Conditioning through Gyrotonic

Workshop by Krithika Rajagopalan
This session session is especially designed for dance teachers, dancers and advanced students, to answer questions about Injuries in Dance. The session hopes to raise awareness about preventing injuries in Indian Dance and conditioning the body to manage the impact of dance on the body.
The workshop on Gyrotonics will introduce participants to exercises especially relevant to Indian dance. Gyrotonic exercises employ movements found in swimming, yoga, gymnastics, and Tai chi, using specialized machines. The system is intended to improve flexibility and balance as well as muscle strength.

Production Aspects: Understanding Light Design

The goal of the workshop is to provide participants with an understanding of how to incorporate lighting design into their work for the stage. Informal in nature and designed for choreographers just beginning to work with light as well as more experienced practitioners, the workshop will focus on two aspects of working with lighting: collaborating with a lighting designer and what to do if one can't.
