Bhargava Manjul |
 Manjul Bhargava, the winner of the 2014 Fields Medal, is the R Brandon Fradd Professor of Mathematics at Princeton University and the Stieltjes Professor of Number Theory at Leiden University. He also holds adjunct professorships at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, and the University of Hyderabad. The Fields Medal, the mathematical equivalent of the Nobel, is given once in four years, and salutes the work done by mathematicians under 40. Manjul is known primarily for his contributions to number theory, his more recent studies relying on simple toys such as the Rubik cube, using the Hamilton, Ontario-born Bhargava is a Sanskrit scholar, a tabla player, a magician, and an educator who simplifies mathematics enough to draw his students – even those in the arts – to study the finer aspects of the subject. And despite having won a slew of awards, people who know him describe him only in such terms as “sweet,” “charming,” “unassuming,” “humble” and “approachable.” |
