The Fine Art Of Protest
Excerpts from the Newsweek Interview with Vibhuti Patel, conducted in New York onOctober 27th 1997

Patel: Why are you conducting political theatre at the moment?
Sarabhai: Performance art is the only thing today that doesn't turn people off. How else can you get people to re-evaluate fundamental issues? We cant separate politics from life

Patel: What do you think of the current political situation in India?
Sarabhai: The complete breakdown of morality and issues is appalling. I am very much involved with grass root change. My work is at that level of initiating local action and change through educating children about issues. India is not a country made for revolution - it is too large and disparate.

Patel: How did you come to be the only Indian actor in (Peter Brook's) Mahabharata?
Sarabhai: Brooks was convinced that the role of Draupadi was so pivotal that it should be played by an Indian. He auditioned 200 actors in India but did not find what he was looking for Then my name was suggested to him. I had never done theatre, and was flve months pregnant and down with severe hepatitis, when he came to Ahemdabad to audition me. I was in a panic when the role was offered to me because it meant being away from home for two years. I was in a new marriage, my child was due the day rehearsals were to begin. I had just set up my publishing business and I was at the top of my dance career' Yet, here was my favorite woman's role in the greatest production imaginable -it was a very tough decision The first year was pure hell.

Patel: What will you do in the future?
Sarabhai: I'll do whatever impassions me, but I'll continue activist performance!
