Indo-American Arts Council hosts
open studio weekend of contemporary Indian art
NEW YORK - The Indo- American Arts Council announces the
Passport to Contemporary Indian An,
a weekend of open studios and gallery tours on Saturday and Sunday,
November 21st - 22nd, 1998,
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. 13 Indian artists will open their studios to passport
holders during this time period,
and three galleries specializing in contemporary Indian art will showcase
the work of additional artists.
A two-day passport costs $25; a deluxe passport costs $100 and includes
an Indian dinner with artists
and gallery owners at the restaurant, Pondicherry, on Sunday, November
22nd.
Dr. Arani Bose, Director of Bose-Pacia Modern, will present an orientation
slide-lecture on
contemporary Indian art at Gallery 678, 678 Broadway (between Bond and
Great Jones Streets) on
Saturday, November 21st, at 10 a.m. Cecelia Levin, a South and Southeast
Asian art historian will
conduct tours of the studios on both days. Participating artists are:
Natwar Bhavsar, Eric Bowen, Bivas
Chaudhuri, Nandini Chirimar, Vinod Dave, Anujan Ezhikode, Arvind Garg,
Bhagwan Kapoor, Vijay
Kumar, Krishna Reddy, Tara Sabbanval, Shehbaz Safrani, and Mohan Samant.
Gallery 678 (678 Broadway),
Bose Pacia Modern (580 Broadway), and A Gallery (521 West 23rd Street)
will represent
the work of several additional contemporary Indian artists.
"The Passport to Contemporary Indian Art presents a unique opportunity
to meet a diverse group of
New York-based Indian artists and view their work in their own studios,"
says Aroon Shivdasani,
Executive Director of the Council, adding that "the participating artists
and gallerists have shown a
great enthusiasm for this distinctive week-end celebration of contemporary
Indian art and artists."
