Schedule for Tendulkar's Festival

PRESS RELEASE
October 4, 2004

Thank you for your interest in Alter Ego Productions and our upcoming production Whose Afraid of Vijay Tendulkar that we are presenting as part of the Vijay Tendulkar Play Festival '04 organized by the Indo American Arts Council (IAAC). Below is additional information about our Theater Company and Whose Afraid of Vijay Tendulkar.

Alter Ego Productions brings together people from many different professional backgrounds sharing a common passion for theater. The company was founded in April 2002 by a group of individuals whose professional focus is not theater but who have a strong interest in theater and significant past experience in directing, acting, or set design.

Our present production, Anuvab Pal and Shourin Roy's Whose Afraid of Vijay Tendulkar, is a story of an American professor of Indian Theater studies and his assistant who travel to India to present at a symposium onVijay Tendulkar, Indian theater's eminence gris. Confronted by the fact that Vijay Tendulkar is going to be present at the symposium, the professor with the help of the assistant grapple to deconstruct Tendulkar's plays while waiting for a suburban train. The story uses a collage of excerpts from four of Tendulkar's plays to capture his narrative of power and violence inherent in institutional spaces as diverse as media (Kamala), the State (Ghashiram Kotwal), and sexuality (Sakharam Binder and A Friend's Story). In doing so, the story also examines Tendulkar's relevance in contemporary India.

Upcoming Show:
October 4
Consulate General of India
3E, 64th St
New York City

Previously, Alter Ego has produced Fatwa, Indian Ink, Chaos Theory, and Hayavadana. Our most successful production to date - The New York Premiere of Tom Stoppard's Indian Ink ran at the Soho Repertory Theater from August 16, 2003 through September 7, 2003. It was a critical and popular success prompting us to extend it to a short off-broadway run and Theater Mania to list it under the 2003's category for "Shows You Should Have Seen But Probably Didn't".

Also attached are bios on the Alter Ego production team and the cast. For a full press kit and more information and photographs please visit us at www.alteregoproductions.org.
