SALAAM Theatre Geeta Citygirl, Artistic Director October 8th and 9th @ 8pm. 549 W 52nd St, 3rd Fl. NYC Salaam Theater is proud to participate in the up coming Tendulkar Festival '04 hosted by the Indo American Arts Council. The Festival celebrates the life and works of one of the most acclaimed contemporary Indian playwrights. Vijay Tendulkar is a playwright, screen and television writer, literary journalist, humanist and a social commentator. Salaam Theatre will present a staged reading of his renowned play 'Kamala'. From Tendulkar's vast repertoire, 'Kamala' was inspired by actual live events where a journalist was able to purchase a woman from a "rural flesh market". In "Kamala", Tendulkar grapples with the issues of morality and hypocrisy. Within the many layers of the play, he questions the current trends in journalism where sensationalism is given higher platform at the expense of human value and dignity. He explores the concept of slavery and it's mutations in urban society and examines the position of women in a male-centric society that is middle-class India. Salaam will present two readings of this play on October 8th and 9th at the Medicine Show Theater. Salaam Theatre has been in existence since 2000 under the guidance of Artistic Director Geeta Citygirl. Since then, it has been conducting regular monthly saloons now famous as 'Salaam Third Mondays'. In June of 2004, Salaam established AWAAZ under the direction of Geeta Citygirl, Anuvab Pal (Literary Manager) and Priyanka Mathew (Play-Development Coordinator). AWAAZ, which means voice, is a monthly play-reading series that strives to be a platform for new writers to develop their craft and help them to go on to be valuable storytellers about South Asian Issues using this challenging medium.
