About the Festival The second annual IAAC:Film Festival featuring the Indian Diaspora promises to be just as exciting and well attended as the inaugural event last year. The festival is a compelling mix of celebrity film makers such as Mira Nair and Ismail Merchant as well as fresh new visions. Last year, the event created quite a stir, and has quickly become a 'must attend' for the South Asian public as well as the film community. A quick survey of last year's attendees indicates an interesting and unusual spread over a wide age from 18- 54 year olds, indicating the strong appeal of good and innovative independent films. This sophisticated group included executives, professionals and independently wealthy individuals with a demonstrated appreciation for art, literature and good living. This year we anticipate the festival attendance growing from 3,000 attendees as its reputation grows. A spectacular Opening Night Gala on Wednesday November 6th will be held at a townhouse that was the former home of legendary actor Montgomery Clift. An exotic and appetizing buffet will be catered by Chefs flown in from the exclusive, five star Oberoi Hotel chain in India. The invited list of celebrities include Uma Thurman, Shabhana Azmi, Ismail Merchant, Mira Nair, M.Knight Shyamalun and Deepa Mehta. About the Indo American Arts Council Formed in 1998, the IAAC has accomplished an astonishingly prolific range of artistic activities ranging from theatre performances, readings, film festivals a well as dance, music and visual arts, in line with its mission of increasing awareness and interest in Indian artistic disciplines in North America. We act as a resource for Indian art, artists and arts organizations and create a network to share information and ideas. The IAAC Advisory Board consists of celebrated artists in every discipline, as well as prominent individuals in the corporate and entertainment worlds. They include bankers, diplomats, financiers and artists interested in building relationships and awareness of the various Indian disciplines. Some of IAAC's events have included a Festival of Indian Theatre at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center, NY featuring playwrights Mahesh Dattani & Vijay Tendulkar, with post performance discussions moderated by theatre luminaries such as Wynn Handman, Artistic Director, American Place Theatre; The Gujarat Earthquake Relief Fund dinner at the Radisson Hotel, NY, with President Clinton as Guest of Honour and keynote speaker; "Devi the Great Goddess" performed by Mallika Sarabhai; a two day "Passport to Contemporary Indian Art" event with open studio visits to prominent Indian-American contemporary artists' studios and a "Masters of Indian Music" concert featuring Pandit Jasraj, Balamurali Krishna and Zakir Hussein in collaboration with the World Music Institute.
