| Chitra Ganesh |
|
| Chitra Ganesh was born and raised in New York City, and currently
lives in Brooklyn. She received a BA magna cum laude from Brown
University, and an MFA from Columbia University in 2002. Awards and
residencies include the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture and
the Henry Street Settlement Abrons Arts Center, CAA Fellowship, and
the Astraea Visual Arts Fund. From 1998-2003, Chitra was a Board
Member of the South Asian Women's Creative Collective (SAWCC). In
2003, Chitra was a featured artist in Velvet Park magazine and chosen
as one of OUT magazine's top 100 people of the year. Chitra is currently Gregory Millard Fellow as one of this year's New York Foundation for the Arts Fellowship awardees.
Chitra's drawings and installations have been exhibited in Toronto,
Brazil, Italy, India, London, Gwangju, and New York, including the
Queens Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, Bronx Museum, Momenta Art, Bose
Pacia Modern, Apex Art, and White Columns. Chitra's work has been
reviewed in Time Out New York, Art Asia Pacific Magazine, India Today,
and the New York Times. In 2004, she received the Astraea Visual Arts
Award, and awarded an LMCC Workspace. Current projects include an
emerging artist workspace grant from the Center for Book Arts, and a
residency at the Artists' Alliance n the Lower East Side |

School Programs Lecturer and Liberty Partnership Instructor, Museum of Modern Art,
9/04- present
Conduct single and multiple part gallery tours centering around museum's permanent collection and current exhibitions with specific thematic and age appropriate focus. Plan and conduct lessons and hands on activities and conversations to build students' critical and interpretive vocabulary around modern art. Create curriculum for and teach semester long Saturday course to high school students at Middle College High School @ LaGuardia Community College via Liberty Program MOMA partnership, prepare and install culminating student exhibition. Course integrates visual history and art making.

Group Tours and Workshops Coordinator, Art in General, 9/02-7/05
Coordinates university, school, and community visits to gallery conducts tours and discussions of current exhibitions, designs and facilitates hands-on art making activities and curricula related to shows, organizes and facilitates discussions between education groups and Artist in Residence. Resident Artist, Global Kids, 10/03-5/04
Work in collaboration with organization's educators, high school students in Canarsie, Brooklyn, and social justice curriculum to research, plan, and realize site-specific exploring key topics of teen sexual health. Introduced students to contemporary site specific installation works.

Painting and Drawing Instructor, Educational Alliance, 6/02 -9/03
Taught painting class at community based organization and art school to adults and children. Familiarize students with basic painting technique, including rendering, perspective, and color theory. Taught summer Gifted Youth Program, developed eight to ten week curriculum in drawing and painting for middle and high school students, assisted in preparing student exhibition.

Board Member, South Asian Women's Creative Collective, New York, NY 11/98 - 9/03
Served on the board of directors of a non-profit arts organization dedicated to the advancement and development of south Asian women artists. Coordinated performance and exhibitions; served as liaison between artist, venues, institutions, and arts organization. Organized monthly meetings, workshops, board and member planning retreats, wrote grants, press releases, develop ongoing outreach and collaborations.

Worked to screen applicants seeking entrance into new teaching program placing non-educator professionals in under-resourced schools. Worked closely with other experienced educators to evaluate essays, sample teaching lessons, and group and individual discussion in rigorous day-long interview process.

Education Coordinator, Project LIFE, Brooklyn, NY 8/98 - 7/01
Provided academic assistance and educational advocacy in after-school pregnancy prevention program for disenfranchised youth. Developed creative projects in media such as video and collage with teens. Supervised, coordinated, and train educational staff, consisting of undergrad and grad tutors, computer programmer and Saturday instructor, provided support for peer tutors. Planned events and workshops with similar projects across the city. Developed Saturday program including curriculum for enhanced reading and math performance, SAT prep workshops, parent workshops on school based advocacy and technology.

Taught English, Social Studies, and English as a Second Language to classes of 25-35 7th and 8th grade students. Created and implemented curriculum emphasizing journal and poetry writing, collaborative projects. Devised lesson plans, and projects correlating to curriculum.
