Statement:
The discovery of perspective, and ways to distort it, came to me in my early years at the Accademia di belle Arti in Rome, and I've never looked back. Through the years I've worked with architects, and learned to play with perspective. Tricking the eye into lengthening, shortening, deepening, and creating space that really isn't there. Thus, no painting is committed to only one orientation. I do this with, colors, light, darkness, and even painterly strokes against hard edge geometry, and frequently outside the rectangle. I like to work large and have painted, several murals, both in Europe and the US. However, the paintings I have in the Museum of Contemporary art in Madrid and the Ciudad Bolivar in Venezuela are in a smaller format on canvas. Size often directs the perspective in my work.
Bio:
Reeta Gidwani Karmarkar,is one of midnights children.Born in war torn Karachi,she grew up in the foothills of the Himalayas.Recorgnition of her as an artist ,started with a silver medal at an iternational UNESCO art show in Seoul Koea,when she was thirteen.She went to the JJ school of arts after highschool.It wasn`t till she went to the Accademia di Belle Arti ,in Rome that she fully hit her stride in taking the achitectonic perspectives of the Italian Renaissance painters and abstacting them, adding interesting colour choices and working them onto large canvases,often outside of the familliar rectangle.
She has exhibited,widely in one woman shows and collectives, both in Europe and America. The artist continues to explore disparate angles and plains of perspective by simultaneously narrowing and expanding spaces with colour and the juxtaposition of rigid and painterly strokes.
