ARTIST STATEMENT
I started out looking for visual equivalents of certain intriguingly abstract ideas of Indian philosophy - the very abstract concept of Brahman. And it was when I turned my attention to the sound of chants that I began to be interested in the appearance of words. This led to the incorporation of the Devnagari (Sanskrit) script into my work.
My primary interest continues in the formal language of visual expression as it is carried forward by the thrust or incisiveness of line, the thickness of texture, the resonance of color, the acrobatic precision of balance, the still, ambiguities of negative space, the contrasts between transparency and opacity, and the juiciness or spareness of ink. It is in the layered and nuanced relationships between elements such as these, that I look each time, for the elusive presence of beauty.
The Ellipse series:
For this new body of work on paper, I delved back into a series of monotypes as a way of reflecting back on earlier experience. In a carefully deliberated process, I began to layer successive skins of collaged paper onto the subsurface of the monotypes, simultaneously concealing and revealing with a duality of elements both drawn and painted, using both transparency and opacity. To heighten the contemplative quality of these collages, I superimposed a neutral palette on the vivid inks and active surface of the underlying monotype.
In doing so, I was trying to reference the thinnest of muslins, of parchments, of faded and almost dissolving surfaces to connote the thinness and delicacy of skin that lies between an immigrant condition and the exposure of shocking and unexpected experience. I chose the ellipse to somewhat deviate from that of the calligraphy, but primarily because it is a universal shape not unlike that of a circle but more feminine – a cycling back with a warp aspect, an uncertain predictability. I’ve used it before although not in this way, rather unconsciously and it has changed meanings often, signifying a canoe, a safe enclosure, a cocoon something that is inclusive.
