The talk will focus on important explorations of abstraction by pioneering modernist artists from India including V.S. Gaitonde, Nasreen Mohamedi, Zarina Hashmi, Akbar Padamsee, and Tyeb Mehta, considering the relationships between figuration and abstraction, between modernist Indian art and internationalist principles and between painting and film discourses
