Rajika Puri and Dancers was established to explore the traditional solo dance form, Bharatanatyam, in choreography that has a contemporary, post modern, flavor and involves several dancers. Artistic director Rajika Puri (who is joined by seven dancers, many of whom are soloists in their own right) has created a suite of seven new dances entitled
Conversations with Shiva: Bharatanatyam Unwrapped, which pays homage to and also ‘plays’ with the traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire.
With the help of vocalist Shobana Raghavan, percussionist (and violinist) A.R. Balaskandan, composer Anil Srinivasan and Grammy Award-winning sound engineer-producer Frank Wolf, Ms. Puri has created new music which also ‘plays’ with the south Indian (Carnatic) music tradition. The whole is transformed into dance-theater by opera and theater director Yuval Sharon, who also designs the visuals.
