Please join Aroon Shivdasani of the IAAC, composer Shirish Korde, flutist Patricia Spencer of the Da Capo Chamber Players and choreographer/dancer Nandini Sikand for a discussion with video and live performance excerpts from the work which premieres in New York and Toronto in 2014.
Phoolan Devi - The Bandit Queen depicts real, re-imagined and often contradictory events in the life of Phoolan Devi, a woman revered by some and reviled by others in contemporary Indian society. The chamber opera examines caste, gender and violence against women, issues of particular relevance in light of recent events in India.
