Aroon & Sherena in Kutch

Aroon & Sherena in Kutch

February 3 – 9, 2024

My friend Sherena and I embarked on a fun, fascinating, learning trip to Kutch for a week – February 3-9, 2024. We toured Dolivara (Harappa) discovering every nook and cranny of the ruins of that 7000 year old civilization, visited ancient step wells, sat down with amazing weavers and embroiderers in their workshops and homes, and went back into the history of Kutch. I was delighted to discover that a lot of the beautiful work – block printing, patchwork and even alot of the embroidery were imports from Sindh!! We met potters, toured local villages, visited the Institute of Sindhology in Adipur and I even spoke in Sindhi to several muslim artists and artisans who had come across the border from Sindh pre 1972. The artist, artisans and potters were all delighted at our interest and happily described their methodology and history in detail. The salt flats were awesome – we rode camels on them with a new respect for nature – in summer those same salt flats become lakes!!! We were housed in “bumbas’ – lovely round, thatched cottages with running water, electricity and beautifully decorated…..with surprisingly uncomfortable beds made of cement (ofcourse they had a mattresses – skinny ones – on the cement beds). 🤣 We were fortunate to have a very knowledgeable guide who was flexible to our suggestions of other places to visit. An absolutely unforgetable trip!
