Rajat Kapoor's Hamlet The Clown Prince
In New York City for Two Days Only!

New York, May 28, 2014 - The Indo-American Arts Council presents Rajat Kapoor's hilarious and paradoxical retelling of Shakespeare's The Tragedy of Hamlet. Join us on July 1st and 2nd at 7:30 pm for Hamlet The Clown Prince at The Cherry Lane Theatre, 38 Commerce Street, NYC.

Directed by Rajat Kapoor who is known among cinema enthusiasts for being a pioneer of the new wave indie Indian cinema; he explores the themes of treachery, incest and moral corruption through clowns! Addressing what has been brushed under a silent shroud, the characters serve as speakers' of undistorted honesty and bluntness.

Performed by a superb cast featuring, Atul Kumar, Neil Bhoopalam, Rachel D'Souza, Kalki Koechlin, Puja Sarup, Sujay Saple and Namit Das; this play is not only a parody of the original Hamlet but is also a digression into the lives of the (clown) characters making it a 'must watch'.

In Kapoor's version, the clowns deliberately misinterpret the original script, take things out of context and derive their own existential conclusions making the play funny as well as filled with contemporary influences, which manage to present the classical tragedy with a modern feel.

“I am delighted to present this fun, insightful piece of theatre to our New York audiences. Exploring life's paradoxes through comedy has long been a theatrical conceit …never more succinctly presented as in this creative adaptation of Shakespeare's conflicted prince", says Indo-American Arts Council Executive Director Aroon Shivdasani.
