Durga Tarangam
Tarangams are songs from "Sri Krishna leela tarangini', a literary work of the 15th century saint poet, Narayana theertha. Dances choreographed to these songs often form the central or main dance in a Kuchipudi solo repertoire.
A tarangam typically portrays the three important aspects of Kuchipudi dance, Nritta (Pure Dance), Nritya (Abhinaya or mime) and Natya (Depiction of a story or drama).
In Durga tarangam, the dancers depict the story of goddess Durga, (shakti or the embodiment of energy), who kills the evil buffalo headed demon, "Mahishasura".
The dancers also describe and portray the beauty and divine characteristics of goddess Durga. The dance concludes with a plate dance, where the dancers execute complex rhythms on the rim of a brass plate, a unique feature of Kuchipudi dance.
