 An actress par excellance, Shabana Azmi has starred in some great Indian films like Ankur, Mandi, Arth, Sparsh, Godmother and Tehzeeb to name a few.
Born to noted Urdu Progressive Poet And IPTA President Kaifi Azmi And Theatre Actress Shaukat Azmi, shabana has acted in films by virtually all of India's Most Famous Art House Directors, including Shyam Benegal, Satyajit Ray, Mrinal Sen, Aparna Sen And Others, as well as in commercial and middle-of-the-road hindi films, and some international films where she has essayed several strong female characters.
She has also acted on stage to considerable acclaim, in plays like Safed Kundali (1980) - M.s. Sathyu's Version Of The Caucasian Chalk Circle – and The Dinner Theater Play Tumhari Amrita with Farouque Shaikh.
She is noted for her naturalness and intensity On-screen, matched by her fierce Advocacy Of The Rights Of Women, Minorities, and Slum-dwellers Off-screen, both through activism and in her role as a Member Of Parliament, with her Consistent Stand in Defense Of Liberal Values And The Freedom Of Expression.
She was recently presented with an award for contribution too cinema at the IIFA Awards in Amsterdam.

| Shabana Azmi at House of Lords |
Shabana Azmi is the first Indian to receive the prestigious International Gandhi Peace prize at the House of Lords in London on 26th Oct.'06. Previous recipients are Dalai Lama, Desmond Tutu, Scilla Elseworthy, Clive Stafford Smith etc. Shabana Azmi will also give the annual memorial lecture at the House of Commons in the British Parliament.
This is Azmi's fourth International honor of social justice and human rights. At the bicentennial celebrations of International Human Rights in Paris, President Mitterand of France, honored Azmi along with Mother Theresa and Nobel peace prize winner Rigoberta Menchu. In 2000, Azmi won the Martin Luther King Award by the State of Michigan. Earlier this year she also won the Award at Davos World Economic Forum. Azmi says she is overwhelmed and accepts the honor in all humility. In today's strife ridden world, Gandhian values of non-violence as a means of conflict resolution have gained even more significance. Azmi explains that her name had been in the running since last Nov. In May 06, the committee had an interface with Azmi in London and although her name had been finalized, she is superstitious about making an announcement till the press release came from the Foundation two days ago.
Javed Akhtar will accompany Shabana for the prestigious ceremony in London on 26th Oct.
After receiving this award Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar will be in USA from Nov. 3rd through Dec, 3rd for the national tour of their new show "Kaifi Aur Main" and some speaking engagements at various universities.
