satyajit-ray
A film made by a woman depicting women who can think independently without being subservient to the male members of the society comes across as a whiff of fresh air indeed! This is the pivotal theme behind director Sangeeta Padmanabhan’s directorial venture which will last for all of 24 minutes. She has had the experience of being associated with the Maneej Premnath directed movie, ‘Waiting Room’ and Aijaz Khan’s ‘White Elephant’.
The short length of the film notwithstanding, it will serve as an excellent tribute to the legendary maestro of Indian cinema, Satyajit Ray. ‘Charulatayude Baakki’ has been adapted from the work of well known author Priya A.S. and reveals the mindset of a young girl who has to get herself ready for the marriage market as per the wishes of her family. Born to a well off aristocratic family from Cochin, Amritha has a mind of her own and loves her college mate who dreams to making a trilogy based on Ray’s film ‘Charulata’. Amritha is forced to surrender her wishes due to parental pressures and gets married to another man instead. The story takes off from there and Sangeeta Padmanabhan describes it as a portrayal of her sensibilities and aesthetics via the medium of cinema.
The Malayalam venture will be screened on November 11, 2010 at the Tenth MIAAC film Festival, New York, with English subtitles. Charulata…A Sequal…Of The Life Untold! will hopefully be able to provide the Indians based in New York with a true picture of the Indian women of today.
