One of the longest-running Indian film festivals in the US -- MIAAC -- will roll out red carpets to welcome personalities like Mani Ratnam, Mira Nair, Salman Rushdie, Seema Biswas and others from Wednesday with Raj Nidimoru's 'Shor' opening the five-day event that will also pay tribute to Smita Patil.
While the features, shorts, and documentaries (all world or New York premieres) are the main focus at the SVA Theater, the sidebar festival "Bhumika: The Roles of Smita Patil", a series of panel discussions about film production in India, and the daily after-parties at glamorous venues all over the city will share some of the festival's spotlight.
"Our 10th annual Mahindra Indo-American Arts Council Film Festival is truly a celebration of Indian film in all its avatars. Our audiences expect (and receive) excitement at our festival, and they leave theatres grinning, ready to party at our nightly celebrations," says Indo-American Arts Council Executive Director Aroon Shivdasani.
"I look forward to our usual overflowing audiences appreciating our wonderful filmmakers with their cast and crew, while epitomising our mission to showcase, celebrate, and build an awareness of Indian artists in North America," Shivdasani said in a statement.
Celebrities expected to the attend the festival and walk the red carpets also include Ketan Mehta, Rituparno Ghosh, Sendhil Ramamurthy, Madhur Jaffrey, Ekta Kapoor, Tusshar Kapoor, Padma Lakshmi, Rahul Bose, Aasif Mandvi, Samrat Chakrabarti, Manu Narayan, Tannishtha Chatterjeee and many others.
The opening film "Shor" (Noise) is a gritty, funny composite portrait of Mumbai inspired from various daily newspaper stories. The film, with Tusshar Kapoor and Sendhil Ramamurthy in the lead, revolves around three stories set during the Ganesha festival.
The closing night film is 'Cooking With Stella' by Dilip Mehta and starring Seema Biswas, Don McKellar and Lisa Ray.
The retrospective of Smita Patil will showcase some of the most important filmmakers and modern classics of Indian cinema like "Arth", "Chidambaram", "Manthan", "Sadgati", "Teevra Madhyam", "Bhavni Bhavai", "Akaler Sandhane", "Ghungroo", "Mirch Masala" and "Bhumika".
The MIAAC festival has been a destination for feature films, documentaries, and shorts from and about the Indian subcontinent. Previous years' festivals have included the New York premiere of Danny Boyle's Oscar-winning "Slumdog Millionaire", Deepa Mehta's "Heaven on Earth" and many others.
