The journey so far, has been memorable. What with Sanjoy Nag's " Memories in March" enjoying acclaim and critical appreciation on foreign shores. It's time the experience becomes equally memorable back home with the film hitting theatres today. Also, 'Net'ing in the good stuff will be "MIM"'s global premiere the same day.
The venture, which boasts of a cast of Rituparno Ghosh, Deepti Naval and Raima Sen, has earned quite a reputation at various film festivals. To the uninitiated, "MIM" had a world premiere at Pusan International Film Festival apart from being screened at the Kerala International Film Festival, Chennai International Film Festival, India Frames Mumbai International Film Festival, MAMI, Mumbai 2010 and Indian Cinema — Premier Pune International Film Festival (PIFF), 2010. What's more, Rituparno won the Best Screenplay Award and Deepti was nominated for the Best Actress Award at MIAAC Film Festival 2010, New York, apart from the film being nominated for the Best Feature Film at the same festival. Naturally then, Shrikant Mohta, director, Shree Venkatesh Films, is looking forward to the film's release. "Though I am aware of the audience reaction to the venture the world over, it gives a different high when it is seeing a Kolkata release. I sincerely hope that the city will appreciate the film in its totality — content, execution and treatment," opines Mohta.
Rituparno Ghosh, who has penned the story, considers this to be an "out-of-way" theme. Says Ghosh, "" MIM" deals with death but goes far beyond. In the midst of life, we are in death. That is how the Book of Common Prayer begins. The realization that death is a part of life is one of the hardest to accept. I lost my mother and then, very recently, my father, while the film was on. The subject, therefore, came naturally to me."
This might be Sanjoy Nag's directorial debut but the film-maker isn't getting the Friday jitters. "I am not the least bit apprehensive," he says, adding, "On the other hand, I am happy that "MIM" is finally seeing the light of day in my city, country and before my audience." And thanks to the positive response to the film elsewhere, Nag is confident of the same back home. "Mani Ratnam, Girish Kasaravalli, Revathi, Ketan Mehta, Deepa Mehta and Pradeep Sarkar were encouraging about the film. I am also aware of the audience reaction worldwide. So, I kind of know what to expect here," says a confident director and continues, "I want to tell the viewers that it's no April Fool's joke. The film IS actually releasing. It's a great feeling to have the bouquet of March or rather the memories of March find an opening on April 1." |
