Dancer and Teacher
Malini Srinivasan is a third-generation Bharatanatyam dancer, choreographer and teacher. She is the disciple of Sri C.V. Chandrasekhar, whose dance, teaching style, and choreography are world-renowned. She began studying Bharatanatyam at a young age with her mother, Radha Srinivasan, and grandmother, Komalavalli Mani who were trained in the Pandanallur tradition by the great Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai. Malini lived in Chennai from 1999-2004 to pursue her study of dance and its allied art forms such as Nattuvangam, Carnatic vocal music, Kalaripayattu, Yoga, Sanskrit and Tamil.
Malini is an acclaimed soloist, performing regularly in the US, Europe, and during the Chennai music and dance festival. She has performed with groups including the Padmini Chettur Group, Ragamala, and Rajika Puri and Dancers. Malini has choreographed solo and group Bharatanatyam pieces, including Ode to Love's Arrows, a solo classical dance production that toured the East coast in 2008.
Based in Queens, NY, Malini is a Lecturer at the Asian & Asian-American Studies Department at SUNY, Stony Brook and is on the dance faculty of the Young Indian Culture Group. Malini is also a Teaching Artist with City Lore in NYC.
In her dance, choreography, and teaching Malini combines classical South Indian aesthetics with a holistic understanding of the art form and a dynamic vision of the body in performance space.
