THATTUKIZHI: |
12 mins |
The Thattukizhi is the rounded stick, considered sacred, with which the nattuwanar (teacher) beats time. It beats the rhythmic tala from the dancer's first steps to the end of her / his training. Tradition has it that God Brahma beat the rhythm for Shiva Nataraja when he danced. The stick is meant to be 3 1/2 spans in length with five divisions, each blessed by the dieties Indra, Rudra, Vishnu, Brahma and Surya. It is kept with great reverence and the student before commencing his / her classes bows to it, in reverence. Similar to the conductors 'baton' in western classical music, the Thattukzhi is wielded by the guru to beat the various talas of the Bharata Natyam. Here the choreographer celebrates the syncopation and syllabic variations in Bharata Natyam, playing with the intricate rhythms of 3, 5, 7 and 9 beats, combining them at times, at others, pitting them against each other, against the spoken syllable and the movement. Concept, choreography and costume by Mallika Sarabhai and lighting design by Kay Jamieson. |
