Preeti Vasudevan |
Award-winning Indian choreographer and artistic ambassador, Preeti Vasudevan bridges cultures, continents and centuries as easily as other dancers might execute a plie. Preeti is a leading exponent of classical Indian dance-theater Bharatanatyam creating new provocative contemporary works from the tradition. Original works performed by her New York City-based dance troupe, Thresh, have earned international acclaim for their fresh juxtaposition of traditional dance forms from her native India with modern theories of movement and expression.
She was delegate to the first American Dance Festival in India (’90) and was awarded a one-year cultural scholarship for cultural studies in Japan (’94). In 2003 she was selected as one of the emerging choreographers by the Joyce Foundation, NY and invited to the International Choreographer's Residency, American Dance Festival (ADF); Summer faculty at the International Theater program at Butler University, IN; faculty at the 2004 American Dance Festival; first Indian choreographer commissioned by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to create Drumming a Dream; Advance theater program with director Anne Bogart and the SITI company (NY). As a classical soloist, Ms. Vasudevan has been the recipient of prestigious awards for her outstanding contribution in the classical arts of India and in her contemporary works, was awared Best Choreography for The Absent Lover at the Mahindra Excellence in Theatre Awards 2009, New Delhi India.
Preeti's ground-breaking educational website, Dancing for the Gods (www.dancingforthegods.org) has been developed to help teachers in the US build a cultural bridge through creative Indian dance. Preeti has a Bachelor's in Psychology and a Master's in Dance Studies from Laban Centre London specializing in choreography and movement analysis.
