The Three Tomatoes
The USS New York; Old Time New York; Films in New York; Fall Cruise up the Hudson

November 7, 2009

The weather in New York is still fall-like, the leaves are at peak, and it's a great time to get out and about. And there's no shortage of things to do. Here are our picks for the upcoming week. Never Forget

Today in NYC, the new naval ship the USS New York will be commissioned. She'll be here through Nov. 11 and you can board her. The bow stem was constructed with 7.5 metric tons of salvaged steel from the World Trade Center. She is one of three new amphibious assault ships named after places where Americans were killed on September 11, 2001. Still under construction are the USS ARLINGTON named for the Pentagon disaster and the USS SOMERSET named for the Pennsylvania county where American Airlines Flight 93 crashed. The USS New York is berthed at Pier 88. We've got goose bumps. Go to 3T Events for boarding times and more information.

The Algonquin Round Table - Old Time New York Revisited

"I require only three things of a man. He must be handsome, ruthless and stupid." That is just one of the many witty quotes from writer and poet Dorothy Parker who was one of the founding members of the Algonquin Round Table which included several other celebrated and witty New Yorkers who met nearly every day for lunch at The Algonquin Hotel from 1919-1929. That was ninety years ago, and we still feel their echoes every time we walk into The Alquonquin Hotel, which is one of our favorite old time New York City spots. And you won't want to miss the upcoming 90th Anniversary celebration of the Round Table Nov. 16th from 7 to 9PM. Along with cocktails of course, there will be a modern day witty group including Joel Stein, Paula Froelich, Michael Musto, Morgan Spurlock and Jane Green. Get the details at 3T Events.

The Next Slumdog Millionaire?

This week on Tomatoes in the Trenches we chatted with the founder of the NYC Indian Film Festival - MIAAC, Aroon Shivdasani. Last year the festival premiered Slumdog Millionaire, and Aroon gave us the inside scoop on this year's festival. (You can listen to the interview at our homepage.) Opening night for example, will feature Today's Special, a new film co-written by and starring Aasif Mandvi from The Daily Show. The festival starts Nov. 11 and goes through the 16th and features more than 40 films. Get more details at 3T Events.

Speaking of Boats and Fall Foliage

Celebrate the season on a brunch buffet cruise up the Hudson River to view the fall foliage. Forming a canyon of the Hudson River north of Fort Lee, New Jersey, the Palisades are among the most dramatic geologic features in New York City's vicinity. Observe this natural wonder from the seat with the best view-on the water aboard the Luxury Yacht Manhattan. Get $95 tickets for $59 at Goldstar.
