'Arpita is still spontaneous'
November 10, 2009

Aniruddha Roy Chowdhury’s Antaheen will be the closing film of New York’s MIAAC before being showcased at the Indian Panorama section and then, being in Antaheen is competing at the Third Eye festival. The director talks to CT before leaving for the US today

The buzz is that after roping in Arpita Pal for your production, Ekti Tarar Khonje, you are trying to get the first couple of Tollywood for your film...
Ten years back, Aprita had worked with me in a skincare and a biscuit commercial. Avik Mukhopadhyay was behind the camera for all these projects. Avik had a talk with Prosenjit regarding Arpita’s comeback. At a party, my wife and I bumped into Arpita and Prosenjit where we casually offered her the role. As far as my films are concerned, I am working with some scripts. One of them has a role tailormade for Prosenjit. It’s a story of a successful man who suddenly finds himself in a difficult situation. I’d want to explore how this character turns into a loner when circumstances change. If Prosenjit likes this idea, we can take it forward from here. But I don’t have any script right now to cast both of them.

A comeback actor, a model whom you had given a break and the wife of Tollywood’s badshah — How does the unit handle these three identities of Arpita on the sets?
This is more of Avik’s film than mine. Everything depends on how the captain of the ship resonates with the unit. Avik is very popular on the sets. When people work on my sets, there’s a lot of commotion. But everything happens very smoothly on Avik’s sets. She is the same old Arpita for me since she maintains a sense of harmony with all her co-stars. Arpita hasn’t lost her spontaneity.

With Antaheen travelling to three festivals this month, how do you evaluate your work as a director?
Amar chhobi korte ichhe hoi, tai chhobi banai. When I watch films from across the world, I feel I’m making mediocre stuff still. I’m continuing to learn.
