B. Prabha

Born 1933, Nagpur, Maharashtra.
B. Prabha adopted a distinctly modern Indian aesthetic - the muddy colors, the rural subject matter, the roughly geometric composion - to conjure a subtly feminist sentiment. By focusing on the female figure in her paintings, she brought attention to the spirit of women in a time of oppression. Rustic women featuring identical pulled-back hairstyles in saris are characteristic of her work. She articulated compassionately, "it is my aim to paint the tragedy of women."
In terms of artistry, she was experimental throughout her career, employing flat planes of color in some paintings and visible brushwork in others and also switching back and forth from oils to watercolors.
She married artist B. Vithal in 1956, with whom she held her first joint exhibition in the same year. Throughout her acclaimed career that followed she held numerous exhibitions in India and abroad.
Died 2001, Nagpur, Maharashtra. |
