Thresh Dance is a performing arts organization founded in 2004 by Preeti Vasudevan, a leading exponent of the classical Indian dance (Bharatanatyam) based in New York City. Thresh creates dance-theater pieces that explore a contemporary movement language derived from the gestures, rhythms and storytelling techniques of Indian classical dance (Bharatanatyam). The company’s mission is to encourage a provocative dialogue between classical Indian and Western contemporary forms, creating an exciting counterpoint between the two cultural styles. Thresh’s work reflects the varied conversations of a globalised, modern society, while showing a deep – and sometimes playful – respect for the traditional movement forms of the choreographer’s Indian heritage.
