The Rye Arts Center and The Indo-American Arts Council present Mela: A Children's Carnival January 26th, 12-3 pm, at The Rye Arts Center Part of Colors of India: a five'week celebration of Contemporary Indian Art and Culture A children's carnival will provide a unique voyage into Indian arts and culture presented by children for children! Sampling from demonstrations and activities, children and adults will learn the art of sari wrapping, watch Indian folk dances, learn to batik, create an incense burner and much more. The Mela will begin at noon with a special performance of the classical and folk dances of India under the guidance of Indra Rajashekar, director of dance schools in Rockland and Westchester counties. The audience will then be invited to partake in a multitude of exhibits, hands-on activities, and live arts demonstrations, all led and performed by Indian children. Organized by educator Subha Sundaram, Mela aims to bring Western and Indian children together to learn from each other in a fun-filled setting. "It is important to dispel myths and misconceptions at an early age", says Colors of India festival organizer, Sandhya Subbarao, "Children aren't afraid to ask the obvious questions such as 'Why do you wear a dot on your head?1 Nor are children afraid to answer, when the questions are asked openly and honestly. It is important to encourage that kind of open exchange." Tickets $7 for RAC member children, $8 for non-members children/ member adults, $10 for non-member adults.
